Was having a spot of trouble with the new mascara from Givenchy – it’s called Démesure Audacious Lashes. The make-up guru, Nicolas Degennes, the driving force behind Givenchy make-up designed it. His brainwaves have included the mascara with a spherical rather than the more typical cylindrical brush, the idea being that you can paint individual lashes from root to tip, top and bottom for a more thorough finish. If you don’t know it, it’s called Phenomen’ Eyes and been a hit. He’s also behind an ingenious lash conditioner, come clear mascara, come mascara undercoat, Mister Lash Booster but back to Audacious…
Its mascara wand is a thick tube, grooved at the end where you would expect to find a mascara brush (see top left). There are so called reservoirs at the tip, to catch the mascara ink as you pull it out of the tube. Inside this there is a fine, mascara brush with a point.
To use, you sweep the end of the tube over your lashes from root to tip. Next, you twist the tip of the lid to release the fine, mascara brush, and run it through lashes to de-gunk and coat, evenly. Third, you take the point or tip of the brush to ease lashes into shape. It’s one heck of a gloopy looking contraption. But… if you’re after thick, spidery lashes (a look coming through for autumn as it happens) and like playing around with make-up, it works. My lashes look just fabulous. One word of warning, if you’re after natural, understated lashes choose something else.
Another extraordinary mascara invention (way on from those ridiculous vibrating mascaras) is by Bourjois. Convoluted name: Volume Fast & Perfect. I like it. It’s heavy and cumbersome but there’s a reason. It has a battery run rotating brush. Switch one way for the right eye, the other way for the left eye. Takes a little practice, but as well as coating lashes with volume boosting lusciousness the rotating action helps curl them ‘though if you have straight lashes, you will still need lash curlers.
All a bit too clever?
Perhaps. But it sure keeps the world of make-up alive.
Démesure is out in July.
