I was at a CEW mentoring event the other morning with one of Hearst Magazines’ top publishers, Meribeth Parker. She ran through her career trajectory from a childhood spent in a small town in Ontario state, Canada, to running the business of publishing both Elle and Elle Deco in London. Of her many pearls of wisdom here are a few home truths for the work place that it was good to be reminded of:
. “Be positive.” An oldie but a goodie because it works – things come to those with a positive outlook.
. “Every challenge has a solution: make lemonade” (it’s an old Canadian saying says Parker – if you have a glut of lemons, heck, go make pop with it). Meaning? Try not to be foxed, see the positive – there we go, back to first point.
. “Invest in how you look, it matters. It makes a difference to how people see you.”
And that’s why the 8am salon blow dry before a very important meeting is a good idea (failing that, a good drier and round brush). That’s why a good hairdresser and colourist is a good idea. Why a make-up lesson with a pro (if you’re unsure of how to do a good job) is a good idea. And why tidy fingernails with clear gloss or a neutral, or if you’re in the creative business, the colour of the moment (emerald or orange) are a good idea. And why a quick dry nail polish – not to mention an effective polish remover – is A COMPLETE LIFESAVER.

Hi, these are great, i’ve got the Grenadine one and it’s fab! at the moment, it’s layered over models own indian ocean and it’s blocked out the blueish pinky sheen but left all the sparkle, incredibly shiny and glittery, lush!
