Exactly when Marilyn Monroe first referred to No 5 time doesn’t relate. That she wears No 5 to bed was first published on April 7th 1952 in an interview for Time magazine. It appears that her comment was simply a means to hide her modesty over admitting to sleeping nude.
This October, Chanel acquired the French Marie Claire interview recorded in April 1960 where she makes that legendary comment. Interestingly it wasn’t used in the published interview, not the kind of ‘incidental’ that would be omitted today…
