Two season’s ahead – well in today’s instant news culture it’s kind of a given.   The secret is in being ahead without looking simply off kilter (summer’s pastels should be given a wide birth at least until May).   This look, created for the Derek Lam show held in New York last Sunday is perfect for now.  A wash of sheer, silver grey metallic shadow over the eye lids and a dash of mulberry over lips is easy to do, flattering on most.  And (this is the key) it really looks the part when it’s icy outside and the blood rushes to cheeks and lips on contact with its glacial air (for those who feel a little too ruddy apply moisturising foundation over cheeks, nose and chin (Bobbi Brown Long-Wear foundation contains glycerine and shea butter).  Note how Tom blends the lip gloss over the model’s lips with a finger – the new lip lacquers (aka opaque, richly coloured lip gloss) can look too heavy if applied neat from the tube.  This is the easiest way to build up colour to the depth you feel comfy with:  apply a dab from the applicator tip to the centre of your lips and blend out with your little finger.

There’s a wait for the products he used here, which launch in August with the Lauder’s Autumn collection.  So to be ahead, achieve the look with their Gelée Powder Eye Shadow in Cyber Silver and Plum Couture Creme Long Lasting Lipstick.  If you want to give a lip lacquer a whirl, Hourglass Liquid Lipstick in Empress has incredible staying power and is a hit with those in the know…
