Happy New Year!  And while I get my beauty hat buzzing again, here’re some pretty lovely polishes and lipsticks for your per-oooh-sal – they’re all from the new Spring collections which will be in the shops over the coming weeks.  Each of these colours look fabulous this time of year – the deep tawny browns, reds, steel greys and a bit of gold.

Clockwise from top:

Estée Lauder Pure Colour Nail Lacquer in 24 (£14) Wild Storm and 04 Berry Desire.  The first is deep grey with a bit of shimmer – dead on trend right now as you’ll have seen from my Dior blog a few weeks ago.  A strong, stark look that’s not for everyone, but it is devilishly chic – so too, the berry.  Wear two coats for maximum impact.  Available March.

Paul & Joe Nail Enamel in 008 Sunshine (£10) – pretty layered on top of a deep colour – lifts them, looks a little more lighthearted, less stark.  Or try two coats over a bare nail – gives a golden lustre that’s more flattering than some of the more orange-y versions, especially now when we’re all are feeling a little pale and wan.  This is from their Parasol Collection – desperately pretty especially the lipsticks and with the most adorable names that conjure up jugs of lemonade on the verandah on an Edwardian Mediterranean.  Chantilly, Alfresco, Dapple…   All out now at Fenwicks and Harrods.

Lancôme French Touch Absolu Lipstick in 312 Ohaa (£23) – odd name but this is lovely.  Not just its neat, compact, discreetly expensive looking tube, but its cherry colour which looks rich and lustrous on.  It’d work well on a slightly cooler skin tone because it’s got blue in it but if you like the sound of it anyway, give it a try at the counter see how it looks.  Available Jan 9th.

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme in Extreme Brown – (£19).  Bronze-brown volumising mascara – fabulous as an alternative to black.  Try it after smudging soft brown shadow over your lids and under your lower lash line.  The effect will be softer than you’re used to if you swear by black, but it’s gently glamorous.   It would work particularly well if you have a bit of red to your hair colour.

Chantecaille Hydra Chic Lipstick in Willow – (£27).   This has made it firmly into my make-up bag.  It is a warm, rich, tawny brown colour without too much orange to it, so works well with my slightly yellow sometimes a bit purple, in-between-y, pale skin.  Available soon from Space NK.

Burberry Lip Cover in Nutmeg (£22).  This is a more orange version of the above so would work well on a redhead.   And on a warmer skin tone, whatever your hair colour.  It featured in the Burberry shows this Spring so is a hottie in terms of ‘look’ for the season ahead.

Okay.  First, please don’t go away but click this You Tube link, the volume on your computer high and love this song (Lindisfarne, Winter Song).

Now, check out this Christmas Card from Burberry.  Funny ironic.  See my probably rather impertinent message here – too irresistible (hope link works).  And there is a worthy cause to be supported there, too.  You know they won the Digital Marketing award at this year’s British Fashion Awards because they’re spot on or rather, forward.  I can’t quite believe that they were the only designer to live stream their last show (I saw it at my desk, got into quite a twitter frenzy over it), but there it was.

Like everyone else I’ve been lying low this past week.  You too?  Join my new club: The Racking Cough Skin Club.  Mine is dull, blotchy, pale with hints of blue and red, dark beneath my eyes.  So, this past week I’ve been dealing with it gently.  Cleansing (evening) with Liz Earle‘s Cleanse And Polish whose eucalyptus scent came into its own.  Following with a facial oil – Aromatherapy Associates’ Revitalising. On top of that, layering on moisturiser, Creme de la Mer – though anything rich and gentle, would be fine, Liz Earle Superskin Moisturiser ideal.   The secret to this ‘RCSC 3-step’ is first, the gentle, exfoliating action of the muslin cleansing cloth, together with its gentle, creamy cleansing formula. Second, the feeding dry, dehydrated skin with a light, nourishing oil applied to warm, slightly damp skin.  And third, the locking in of its goodness with a thin layer of moisturiser.

Foundation can be difficult to put on in winter, especially after  a cold – it doesn’t smooth on evenly and can show up flaky skin.  This is why Givenchy‘s new foundation, Photo’Perfexion Light is such a find.  It is sheer foundation with a sponge applicator tip. This may sound like a gimmick but it makes sense.  A good quality make-up sponge is great for giving a smooth, even finish.  The foundation itself is sublime – sheer (not enough if you have high redness), light, very easy to blend, perfect colour (mine 4 Light Beige).   Squeeze the tube gently and a little pops through onto the sponge.  Dot onto cheeks, nose and chin and buff in.  You may find you get too heavy an application this way. Unscrew the sponge, squeeze a blob onto the back of your hand.  Screw it back on and work from the back of your hand.   It’s out in February – not too long to wait.

‘You and your friends …  cool to the touch, you warm me so much…’

I’ll keep it short but sweet:

Hair – centre part, straight, loose, long.  Nina Porter, face of Burberry, gamine crop, super-short bangs.

Skin – polished, flawless, glowing, youthful.

Cheeks – little blush, rose pink flush.

Lips – trench beige, the new neutral.

Eyes – mascara, liner, neutral shadow…

Verdict:  The new neutral.  100% Burberry.

Will we wear it?  Probably.

‘… feels like I’m seventeen again… funny how it seems like yesterday…’

If only.

I’ve already blogged about Burberry’s new make-up line – but not yet, the new scent from Clive Christian.  Aka the man behind some of Cheshire’s grandest kitchens (think chandeliers and bespoke with a capital ‘B’ – he doesn’t do shabby chic – or industrial for that matter).  Oh, and a scent which was in its time the world’s most expensive.

So, here’s a rough translation of this news piece I wrote for Japanese Vogue, with a few word tweaks:

Clive Christian – First New Scent in 10 Years

After a ten-year lull, Clive Christian has released a fourth scent, from his own private collection.  Its name, “C”, is apt.  It is both his initial and that of The Crown Perfumery, the small, London perfumery, which he purchased in 1999.  In its day, The Crown Perfumery was one of London’s most sought after, used by Queen Victoria who in 1872, issued it with a royal warrant.

Clive Christian scents, which are inspired by Victorian scent making, are some of the most sought after among scent aficionados.  A decade ago, the interior designer stormed the perfume world with the launch of six, three for women and three for men.  The most infamous was No.1.  It was billed the World’s Most Expensive Perfume, because it was created without budget restrictions and using some of the most expensive ingredients in perfumery.  Price aside, each of these scents offered something new to a world where perfumery had become bland and driven by marketing.

These two new arrivals (he always does a men’s as well as a women’s version) are just as captivating.  “C” for women is a floral based around a rose and jasmine absolute accord, combined with notes of violet and tuberose.  “C” for men is a spicy, herbal blend with saffron and the high-altitude mountain flower Snow Lotus.  Both are rich and complex.  Forget light, ‘no-scent’ scent – this pair kick ass.

£195 at Fortnum & Mason and The Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie, Harrods

I blame it on Nina Porter, the barely-16 year old school girl who’s adorning the glossies as the cute, boyish fledgling face of Burberry’s new make-up.  I’m not obsessed, honestly. ‘though it only seems like yesterday that I remember my young cousin (who happens to be at school with Nina) as a baby, bouncing around in her carry cot at Christmas.  Cripes.

But I ‘m not bitter.  Because like my cousin, she’s a poppet, which is how she comes across in this vogue.com interview.    I (meantime) am also trying to get over the idea that we’re most beautiful at 31…

…am now out of my funk and praising the Lord for eye cream, concealer and soft focus foundation – today: Estee Lauder Perfectionist (soft focus lens effect for eyes) Burberry’s Sheer Foundation (v g) and Creme de la Mer’s new concealer (magic, out September).
