Calling all nail luvvies! Andrea Fulerton is it

Got a little misty eyed when I feasted my eyes on celebrity manicurist, Andrea Fulerton’s fabulous new nail line. Missing the between-takes chat you see. And the magic she wielded with her file and polish brush on the photo shoots did together was quite something else. Andrea makes doing nails look terribly easy – even when a model’s nails are less than up to scratch (always get a hand model and if she’s sick, have back-up).

Andrea has polished the nails of more A-listers than is decent. So she knows who has good nails. Take Penelope Cruz – hands and nails from heaven. Natural then that she should call each of her 24 nail polishes after her pet A-listers. There’s a sugar pinkCarrie, a deep purple Kate (Moss?) a choc-brown Penelope and so on.

I’m intrigued by her Trio Colour Layering System (£7.99) – you get two polishes, one at either end of a nail polish pen. Paint one colour on top of the other and you have a third. Fun. My favourite is probably Gold Finger – deep, dusty gold + opalescent white = a soft, smoky silver-grey.

Ooh, I’ll have a few grey highlights please…

Icy, golden or honey blonde okay. But grey streaks through your hair? This has got to be one of the weirder beauty trends to emerge from the spring/summer shows.

Giles Deacon shot girls down the catwalk with blue-grey streaks. Rodarte did a bit too – more of a grey halo on one or two. And Proenza Schouler experimented with the greyish lilac granny rinse, a look I remember well, sported all bold and brazenly by a couple of art school mates after persistent encounters with bleach and ensuing gos with red.

And you’ll have seen the photos of Kate Moss a couple of weeks ago. That may have been fashion, but it looked plain awful. She’s now back to her golden gorgeousness (thank heavens).

All this probably won’t entice you to try ColourFX Sacred Silver spray, which when sprayed tactically will give you the aforementioned streaks. More silver than grey though. Perhaps the thought of Pixi Geldof’s self imposed grey, or John Galliano’s models at the recent Dior show, hair streaked white – the kind of pure, ice white you only ever really get to see on someone elegant and elderly – might tempt you? If you hate the result, you can wash it off and donate the silver spray to your local school’s drama department. At £3.49, it won’t hurt.

This shampoo really does boost volume

Mostly, I’m sceptical about shampoos and conditioners that promise to boost volume. That’s what your volume spray or mousse is for, isn’t it? So when presented with Kate Moss’s hairdresser, James Brown‘s new babies, I could have walked away with a toss of my perfectly volume-filled bob (thank you Oribe, for your seriously good if rather expensive, Volumist spray). But Brown has that kind of effect on me. Suffice it to say, I lathered, conditioned, rinsed, towel dried. As my hair began to ‘air dry’ (me munching on my boiled egg. 8am), I noticed that it looked a bit bulkier than usual. To put this shampoo and conditioner through its paces, I forewent the volume spray, ran a small blob of mousse through and blow dried as normal. The result was lovely, thick, bouncy hair. Now, at £5.99 a pop, plus a blob of say, my Garnier volumising mousse, I’m converted. My eye wateringly expensive A-list, spritz will be kept for particularly, special occasions.
