Tum te tum.  Well.  If you haven’t already heard about the style god, Tom Ford‘s new lipsticks (where have you been?), they’re here today, April 24th – at Selfridges.

Now, as a seasoned, ‘select’ beauty writer I was invited to meet with his fabulous twelve, back in February at the swanky, Dorchester Hotel, Terrace Suite.   There the beauties perched, resplendent, standing to attention in their smart, white uniform.

I sat down.  I tried each and every one.  I took swatches (see right, though I didn’t do the math and two are missing, a nude and a deeper brown).  I jotted down the embargo date (shame on we who break it).  I settled on two I’d like for myself, which was difficult, several worked great.

The first?  Moroccan Rouge,

the loveliest plum and perfect with my pale, but slightly yellow skin.  The second?  True Coral:

Coral is fast shaking off its slightly naff, 70s, Terry & June, connotations, though I keep thinking glorious Sophia Loren circa ’65 and that’s where I’m going here.  On a quiet day I’ll be wearing it sheer, with lip balm on top, in summer, with smudgy eyeliner.  Or, on a big day, properly, applied with a brush, face a bit brown and little or no eye make-up.

But back to the point.  Tom is asking us for £35 a pop.  The colours are rich, clear and look expensive.  The texture is soft, silky, creamy.  They last.  Not as long as long-lasting lipstick, but they’re more comfy.  Colour stays true (it doesn’t change on your lips unlike some).   And they’re by Tom Ford.  He should probably go into the Oxford Thesaurus as a byword for style, luxury, glamour, and lust (possibly – his notorious ‘G’ bikini wax, Gucci ads of 2003 were only the start of it.).   Judging by the success of his scents, they’re likely to be a hit.  Price notwithstanding.

Estée Lauder signs Tom Pecheux

Great that Lauder brings Tom Pecheux, one of the industry’s make-up superstars intothe fold as Creative Make-Up Director. Things haven’t been as exciting in lipstick terms, since Tom Ford’s collaboration with the brand – the result was consistent, sell-out collections of fabulously glamorous, make-up. It’s time for another shake-up. This is good news.

This is just one of a series of ongoing hirings within the make-up arena. The last most talked about was Peter Philips’ arrival at Chanel. He took over from Dominique Montcourtois and Heidi Morawetz who’d been at the helm for around 20 years. Next up, celebrity darling, Gucci Westman’s move from Lancôme to Revlon in Spring last year and, Aaron de Mey’s enlistment at Lancôme. Val Garland took over from Linda Cantello at YSL (Cantello incidentally, was assisted by Tom Pecheux some twenty/thirty years ago). Pat McGrath, behind the original Armani make-up line has now been at Max Factor for five years.

The make-up artist voice is stronger now than it ever was. (Funny to think that forty years ago there was no such thing – models did their own make-up.) This is why the cosmetics houses are lapping them up. They know their craft, they know what works and having worked with some of the most creative photographers in the world, have developed the kind of fine-tuned, eye that will help today’s cosmetic houses remain modern, forward thinking, exciting and new.

I for one can’t wait to see Pecheux’s first collection – Spring 2010. Bring it on.
