Tag: quick-dry nail polish

The new nail company, Kure Bazaar has just caught my eye.   It has been formulated without some of the chemicals many of us would rather avoid in nail polish.  These include the solvent tolulene, which can be absorbed through the nail, Dibutyl Phthalate or DBP, which has been linked to asthma and formaldehyde, a possible carcinogen.  True to say, the polish dries more slowly than some but if applied at night will have enough time to dry through by morning.   Its colour palette is pretty good, the coral red above is Afrika.  Its pastels, Fjui (lilac), Sakura (pink) and Kerria (yellow) are bang on trend for a spring 2013 that’s awash with pastels.

Seche Vite, which makes the cult quick dry top coat has just launched a colour collection.  It’s also free of the above three chemicals.  I like Contemporary, flattering neutral heather grey that works well on pale skin (these modern stone or putty tones only highlight redness in the skin, while this complements it).

Today though, I’m wearing one of the new spring colours from Estee Lauder, designed by make-up supremo Tom Pecheux.  It’s called Bittersweet, bitter chocolate and good against my pale, red-tinted skin tone.   You’ll have to wait till March to buy it so for now, tap into the deep green trend with Viper, dark green flecked with subtle shimmer.

The Friday Beauty Edit #2

Il Libro Degli Agrumi Verde s’Arancia, £22.50.  This is simply a lovely, orange flower scent.  Light, pretty, unobtrusive, great any time of year.  It’s available online and at one of the three new Marks & Spencer beauty departments (High St Kensington is one) and is part of a brilliant line-up of scents, skincare and body care affordably priced and of the calibre you might expect to see at Space NK.  These beauty departments are set to expand across selected M&S’s across the country.  Keep an eye out.

Rimmel 60 Seconds in Blue Eyed Girl, £2.48.  Right now, this is on my left big toe.  On the rest (of them) is a blue by Roccoco nails courtesy of a medi-pedi at the new Margaret Dabbs clinic at the Bulgari Spa in Knightsbridge.  This saved the day for my smudged toe nail.  Very cool colour.  Flattering royal blue.  Also fab on fingernails.  Orange may be summer’s hot nail colour but for me, this is it.

Lancome Rouge In Love Lipstick in 322M, £21.  A pinkish coral that harps back to the 50s, but looks modern and flattering and gorgeous thanks to the silky, moisturising texture of the lipstick.  As far as coral’s go this looks fresh and clear rather than flat and chalky.  A caveat: coral can look sickly – best against a bronzed or super pale peaches-and-cream skin.  Do apply bronzer!

Melvita Moisturising Rose Nectar, £24.  Sometimes the simplest things are best.  This delicate, soothing, daily moisturiser is steeped in rose water and extract of rose petal .  If your skin is normal or slightly dehydrated it is ideal.   Silky texture, quick to absorb and not at all greasy – sublime. Yes, I love it.

I was at a CEW mentoring event the other morning with one of Hearst Magazines’ top publishers, Meribeth Parker.   She ran through her career trajectory from a childhood spent in a small town in Ontario state, Canada, to running the business of publishing both Elle and Elle Deco in London.  Of her many pearls of wisdom here are a few home truths for the work place that it was good to be reminded of:

. “Be positive.”  An oldie but a goodie because it works – things come to those with a positive outlook.

. “Every challenge has a solution: make lemonade” (it’s an old Canadian saying says Parker – if you have a glut of lemons, heck, go make pop with it).  Meaning?  Try not to be foxed, see the positive – there we go, back to first point.

. “Invest in how you look, it matters.  It makes a difference to how people see you.”

And that’s why the 8am salon blow dry before a very important meeting is a good idea (failing that, a good drier and round brush).  That’s why a good hairdresser and colourist is a good idea.  Why a make-up lesson with a pro (if you’re unsure of how to do a good job) is a good idea.  And why tidy fingernails with clear gloss or a neutral, or if you’re in the creative business, the colour of the moment (emerald or orange) are a good idea.  And why a quick dry nail polish – not to mention an effective polish remover – is A COMPLETE LIFESAVER.

That’s why I asked the nice people at Bourjois if they’d team up with me to offer 10 sets of fast working nail treats for 10 lucky readers.   5 of their brilliant, new, quick-dry 1 Seconde Gel nail polishes (when it’s cold outside they really do, when it’s warm they take a few seconds longer).  Plus:  Magic Nail Polish Remover.  Stick a nail into the remover-steeped foam inside, twirl around for a second or two and remove: nail clean.   Since it launched a few weeks ago, one bottle has sold in the UK every 10 seconds.

It takes 2 simple steps to apply for this my first giveaway.  1) Post a comment on this blog (you only need to say ‘hello’ a test this isn’t).  2) Subscribe to this blog by email (so we can contact you by email to let you know you’re a lucky winner.  There will be no sending of your details to a third party).  The first 10 comments or hellos (spam and repeats will be politely ignored) will receive their Bourjois nail polishes and remover by post.

[Offer ends 11 July 2012 or when the first 10 eligible comments are chosen.  Offer is open to those with a UK address.]

UPDATE – Thank you to all of you who entered.  The first 10 eligible comments have been chosen and the lucky winners will have received their polishes.   Sorry to those who didn’t win this time – keep your eye out for the occasional give-away I’ll be doing in the future.  Thanks again to all my dear readers x
