Bafta winning beauty 2013

Clockwise from top left: BAFTA/ Jonny Birch, Stephen Butler, Jonny Birch all for Lancome

Through-the-roof nail polish sales may have superseded lipstick as most popular cosmetic purchased during a recession.  But at the BAFTAs, lipstick slicked lips were out in force.   Perhaps this had something to do with the fact that Lancôme, makers of particularly fine lipstick, was once again make-up sponsor.   There was no single theme – just the trio of red carpet classics: the perfect red, the perfect berry and the perfect nude.  I’ve pinned down my make-up moles for the low down on three of the best dressed lips:

Bond girl beauty, Olga Kurylenko – Lancôme Rouge In Love 181N

Anna Karenina’s, Alicia Vikander – Lancôme Rouge In Love 277N

Pan Am’s Bridget, Annabelle Wallis – Lancôme Rouge In Love 240M

BTW.  Instead of watching BAFTA last night I watched Call The Midwife.  It’s comforting, all-good goodness is just the tonic for cold Sunday evenings.  I found myself wondering what Jenny Lee, its flawlessly make-up free heroine played by Jessica Raine would look like in red lips.   I have the next best thing: Jessica at BAFTA and yes you guessed, in Lancôme – L’Absolu Rouge in 150 Rouge Odysée.  To give her red lipstick staying power make-up artist Jaysam Barbosa applied a little concealer to her lips, then lined and filled them with red lip liner and applied two coats of lipstick blotting the first coat.

Hair note: Jessica’s glossy up-do was created by the hairdresser, Marc Trinder.  To style and fix it, he used Charles Worthington’s Amplifying Volume Treatment, Body Booster Mousse and Max Hold Hairspray.

As the face of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Keira was as you’d expect, in lip to brow Chanel, (not to mention ear lobe to toe, Chanel couture).   You can read about how my friend, the make-up artist Lisa Eldridge did her make-up on her fantastic site here.   Meantime, here are a few highlights:

On Keira’s skin – Perfection Lumière Foundation in Beige – tip: apply with a flat, synthetic hair foundation brush and buff into the skin lightly to blend.   The Body Shop‘s new make-up brushes are ideal.  Apply a touch of loose powder to nose, forehead and chin with a clean blusher brush to tame shine if prone.

To conceal her under eye shadows (if she has them) – Eclat Lumière in Beige Clair – tip: apply to high points, brow bone, tops of cheek bones and Cupid’s bow to highlight and open up the face.  I like Liz Earle‘s Light Reflective Concealer, which I used this morning.

On Keira’s eyes – Ecriture de Chanel in Noir, liquid liner, along upper lash line flicked out to create a subtle cat eye – tip:  soften line with powder shadow – Lisa used Ombre Essentielle in Ebony.

On her lips – Rouge Allure lipstick in Evanescente – tip: line and fill lips with natural lip pink, lip pencil to help it last – Lisa used  Chanel’s Natural lip pencil.  Mac Spice is a classic.

Oscar Make-Up Highlights 2012

Here’s the headline news on who wore what in terms of make-up at yesterday’s Oscars.   Hollywood make-up supremo, Angela Levin worked her magic on Michelle Williams, Sandra Bullock and Glenn Close, using Chanel make-up.  Highlights were for Williams the lips, where Levin blended together pinkish coral (Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick in Paradis) and plum (Destinée) which took the high-summer edge off the coral.  Result?  Warm, fresh, modern.   Sandra Bullock looked super polished.  The star product was the blusher (Blush Horizon de Chanel – the striped sunset inspired blush that’s a limited edition – so hurry!), which says Levin, ‘added a fresh, youthful look.’

Glenn Close was a lesson in how to get make-up right when you’re northward of your fifties.  That her eyebrows weren’t over emphasised was soft and flattering.  Fresh, rose pink hues on cheeks and lips looked prettily youthful.  Star products included Chanel‘s brow pencil in Blond Clair, Rouge Coco Shine Lipshine in Unique (irksomely not available in the UK – but think pinkish or brownish raspberry and sheer, when you’re next out shopping) and their super sheer foundation Vitalumière Aqua.

Gwyneth Paltrow looked flawless and Hitchcock beautiful.  To achieve flawless skin such as this you need the works: skin primer, foundation and powder applied carefully.  And for lips: leggy Angelina Jolie and Milla Jovovich showed us how red lips are done.  For the best reds look to YSL or Chanel – or for Jovovich a L’Oréal’s red, one of which you can bet she’s wearing here.

Amy Adams was kitted out in make-up from the super-lux cosmetics line Hourglass (find it at Liberty) by make-up artist, Stephen Sollitto.  Lovely soft, nude shade on lips: Velvet Creme Lipstick in Grace with a little gloss on top.  And on her eyes, coppery brown – a really flattering smoky hue on most: from Horglass Eye Shadow Duo in Exhibition.  And the pièce de resistance, a black lash gel applied to the lash root to make lashes appear super thick: Film Noir Lash Lacquer.  Fabulous.
